If you've been disappointed by the increasing lack of lavish Bollywood song-and-dance numbers in recent cinematic imports from India, rest assured that ABCD 2 ups the dance quotient considerably. That's because both this film, and its predecessor 2013's ABCD(which stands for Any Body Can Dance), rests on a premise that not only requires, but demands fancy footwork. Seizing on the popularity of dance-driven films like the Step Up franchise and such TV shows as “So You Think You Can Dance,” the ABCDseries takes place in the world of hip-hop hoofing competitions, where teams of b-boys and b-girls stomp, jump and otherwise hurl their bodies around a stage in high-energy, high-stakes routines. (Both moves are loosely derived from the experiences of a real-life Indian hip-hop dance crew, the Fictitious Dance Group, who made it to the finals of the 2012 World Hip-Hop Championships.) Traditionally, Bollywood musicals never needed a reason for their characters to start dancing and singing, which may be one reason why they've struggled to cross over with international audiences, particularly here in America where contemporary moviegoers seem to demand motivation for a musical number. Thanks to the dance competition hook, the characters in ABCD 2 have built-in motivation to show off their moves, although director Remo D'Souza (who also helmed the first installment) makes sure to sprinkle in a few non-diegetic musical sequences—most spectacularly a love song filmed against a desert landscape—to keep with Bollywood convention.
